Simply refresh the main page to be shown a random photograph.

All images here were digitized from their original negatives. You may notice that many have significant scratches or other damage. No edits have been made to them beyond negative to positive inversion, simple cropping, and basic brightness/contrast adjustment. Currently, you will find it easy to make it through all the images. More will be added over time.

This project was inspired by two things:

• Museums and galleries moving away from tagging objects with "artist unknown", choosing to use "artist once known" when a creator's name has been lost (which I appreciate).
• Websites like this one that use generative AI to display facsimile faces whenever you refresh the page (which I have less appreciation for).

At this point, I have probably looked at tens of thousands of photos/negatives captured between the 1840s and today. The vast majority of those images feature people who's names are completely unknown to me, with little to no accompanying clues to discover who they were. This website is dedicated to those people.

Today, we tend to take photos for granted. They are so easy. Most of us snap at least a few of them every day. But, this is a very recent phenomenon. Even at it's most convenient, analog photography limits how many photographs you can take (if only based on how much film you can carry), leaves you wondering how your photos will turn out (until you develop them), and every frame comes with a cost (for the film, development, and printing). Digital photos are essentially unlimited, instantly viewable, and (arguably) cost nothing.

To be clear, digital photography and the ease with which you can take a photo today is a good thing. But, when browsing the photographs on this site, I encourage you to look at them as both little windows into the past, as well as tiny bits of encapsulated human creativity and effort. Most (though not all) of these images are old enough that the people in them are no longer here... but they were. They lived lives, had thoughts, desires, dreams, had an impact on the people around them and, at some point, their picture was taken.
